A Simple Plumbing Maintenance Checklist for Sydney Homes

Most plumbing emergencies start as small, overlooked issues. A little regular maintenance goes a long way toward avoiding burst pipes, major leaks and expensive repairs.

Every few months

• Check under sinks for early signs of dampness or leaks
• Test that your main water shut-off valve still turns freely
• Look for water stains on ceilings, particularly below bathrooms
• Check outdoor taps and hoses for drips or corrosion

Once or twice a year

• Check your water meter for movement when no water is in use, to catch hidden leaks early
• Have your hot water system's temperature and pressure relief valve checked
• Clear leaves and debris from gutters and stormwater drains, especially before storm season
• Check for slow-draining sinks or showers before they become full blockages

Before you go away

If you're leaving your property empty for an extended period, it's worth knowing where your main shut-off valve is so you (or someone you trust) can turn off the water supply in case a leak develops while you're away.
