Signs Your Hot Water System Needs Replacing

Most hot water systems last somewhere between 8 and 12 years, depending on the type of system, water quality and how well it's been maintained. Here are the signs it might be time to consider replacement rather than another repair.

Your system's age

If your hot water unit is approaching or past the typical lifespan for its type, ongoing repairs may cost more over time than replacing it with a newer, more efficient system.

Rusty or discoloured water

Rust-coloured hot water, particularly if cold water runs clear, often indicates corrosion inside a storage tank. Once a tank starts rusting internally, it's generally a sign of a failing unit rather than something a repair can fix long-term.

Inconsistent or insufficient hot water

A system that used to comfortably supply the household but now runs out quickly, or heats unevenly, may be losing efficiency due to sediment build-up or an ageing heating element.

Unusual noises

Popping, rumbling or banging sounds from a hot water tank are often caused by sediment building up at the bottom of the tank, which reduces efficiency and can eventually damage the unit.

Visible leaks or pooling water

Water pooling around the base of a hot water unit usually means the tank itself has failed and needs replacing, since a leaking tank generally can't be repaired.
