Most plumbing work in NSW legally requires a licensed plumber, but a licence is the floor, not the ceiling. Here's what separates a properly qualified, insured business from the rest, and what to check before you book.

Check the plumbing licence

In NSW, plumbers must hold a current licence from NSW Fair Trading. You can check a licence number on the public register to confirm it's valid and covers the type of work being done. Ask for the licence number upfront, and verify it before work begins.

Check the gas fitting licence separately

Gas fitting requires its own endorsement in NSW. A plumber who is licensed for general plumbing isn't automatically licensed for gas work, so if the job involves gas appliances, gas lines or gas leaks, confirm the business holds a current gas fitting licence.

Confirm insurance

Public liability insurance protects you if the plumber's work causes damage to your property, and it's a reasonable thing to ask about for anything beyond a small repair. A properly insured business won't hesitate to confirm it.

For anything beyond a simple job, ask for a written quote that clearly sets out what's included, whether GST is included, and whether the price is fixed or could change once work starts. A written scope protects you if there's ever a dispute about what was agreed.
