Comparing quotes on price alone can be misleading. These questions help you understand what you're actually paying for before work begins.

About licensing and insurance

• Are you a licensed plumber in NSW, and can you provide your licence number?
• For gas work, do you hold a current gas fitting licence?
• Do you carry public liability insurance?

About pricing

• Is this quote fixed, or could the final price change once work starts?
• Is there a call-out fee, and is it credited toward the job if I go ahead?
• Do you charge standard, after-hours or emergency rates for this job?
• Is GST included in the quoted price?

About the job itself

• What's actually included in the quote, and what would be extra?
• How long do you expect the job to take?
• What warranty applies to the parts and the labour?
• Will you need council approval or compliance certification for this work?

Getting it in writing

For anything beyond a small repair, ask for the quote and scope of work in writing before work begins. This protects both you and the plumber if there's ever a dispute about what was agreed.
